In 1982 he raced F1 for March, gaining places in 4 of his 10 races. His 1983 performance with Ligier was improved with 6 places out of 13 races. He joined Dick Simon Racing for the IndyCar series in 1985 and won the 'Most Improved Driver Award' in 1986.
